Immigration and America’s Growth

Overview
This project showcases how immigration is vital to keeping America’s cities and counties growing, using interactive data to reveal that over 160 counties would be shrinking without immigrants. I worked as the data scientist on the project, handling data cleaning, merging, and analysis across multiple Census and demographic sources, and building the interactive visualizations that made these findings accessible to both policymakers and the public. My role included designing a reproducible data pipeline, ensuring consistency across disparate datasets, and creating maps and charts that highlighted the geographic variation in growth and decline.
The final product was both a research brief and an interactive online tool that translated complex demographic patterns into an engaging and easy-to-explore format. By showing how immigrant communities are helping stabilize tax bases, sustain workforces, and revitalize both urban and rural areas, the project provided evidence to inform real-world debates about immigration and economic growth. Beyond documenting national trends, it also allowed users to drill down into individual counties, making it possible for local leaders and advocates to understand the specific role immigration plays in their communities.
From big cities to small towns, immigration is what keeps America growing. Without immigrants, countless counties would be shrinking instead of thriving.
