Sustainable Development Report of the United States 2021

Project type

Research report

Overview

This project evaluated how U.S. states are performing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the results were clear: none of the states are on track to meet the 2030 targets, and many are moving backward on key issues like inequality, climate, health, and housing. As a research assistant, I was responsible for building the underlying database that brought together hundreds of state-level indicators and for creating the visualizations that made the findings accessible to policymakers, researchers, and the public.

The work showed that business as usual will not be enough - addressing entrenched inequality, environmental risks, and gaps in basic services requires bold, coordinated action. By framing U.S. state performance through the lens of the SDGs, the project provided both a global context and a local call to action.

The U.S. is falling far short on the Sustainable Development Goals - no state is on track, and many are even moving backward. Inequality, climate inaction, and poor access to basic needs show that business as usual won’t get us to 2030 target goals.
